A Model 620 riot gun was available for sale in the mid-1930s and there are the Model 520A and 620A riot and trench guns made for WWII.Ive recorded several in the 23xxx-25xxx range with the later triangle style safety. It looks like Stevens was producing around 10000 Model 520 a year during this period so I would estimate yours to be from around late 1911.
Keep an eye out on Gun Broker and eBay (Search: Stevens 520) the early rounded stocks show up from time to time. Its good that you have the intact original butt plate as those are harder to find in one piece than stocks are. That would mean this shotgun was around when William Howard Taft was president of the United States an there were only 46 states. Chevrolet officially entered the automobile market to compete with the Ford Model T. Best thing about that year was the United States Army formally adopted the M1911 pistol as its standard sidearm, giving the gun its 1911 designation. Numrich shipped me a walnut stock today that they claim will fit a model 520 just in case we want to shoot it. Planning on using a powdered resin wood glue on the original stock to piece it back together. The stock that you get from Numrich will be for a later 1925-39 Model 520 and will probably require some fitting. I found a uTube video on field stripping a 520 an went through it this mourning with no problems. I used a half of a bottle of Hoppes solvent and a bunch of cleaning swabs. It cleaned up nice, no rust and all the springs looked acceptable. Well use the replacement stock to shoot it with and put the original back on to display it. Enjoy shooting it. Be aware that the action has an inertia release block in the back left side of the receiver (held in by the top screw on the back left). The slide will only unlock after a live fire or by hitting the slide release, unlike more modern shotguns where you can unlock the slide after a dry fire with forward pressure on the fore arm. It has a short (I havent measured, but is maybe 19 or 20 with a brass bead). Stevens 520 S Serial Number And ManufacturerNo stamps or markings anywhere other than serial number and Manufacturer. Would you be able to provide any information regarding it I was wondering about it. From the factory short barrel, I am assuming it is a riot gun made for law enforcement or prison use. Not likely a factory riot gun as there is no evidence that Stevens offered anything shorter than a 26 barrel length during this time period. Still, its an interesting home defense shotgun and for 160 you did fine. A cut down Model 520 from the 1920s recently sold for 315 on Gun Broker. The earliest known short barreled Model 520s are some prototype trench guns made for the War Department around 1918 (none known to still exist).
